Making the Most of Your Demographics

Reporting Demographics

Including demographic information in your census file such as department or manager is key in getting the most out of your feedback. However, deciding which demographics to include can be challenging.

Narrow vs. Broad Demographics

It’s essential to include both narrow and broad demographics. For example, "job title" represents a narrow demographic, offering detailed insights when enough data is available per title. However, with less data, you could find yourself unable to show clear trends.

On the other hand, broader demographics like "job family" group multiple titles under a single demographic. This approach allows for meaningful analysis even when data is limited.  Below are some examples of narrow vs. broad demographics:

Narrow

Job Title

Department

Manager

Broad

Job Family

Location

VP

How many demographics?

Wondering how many demographics to include? As a best practice, include any that could be useful now or in the future. It's better to have data that you don't currently need than to find yourself lacking later. Even if demographics such as VP or Director seem irrelevant now, they could become valuable down the line.  By including a variety of demographics and balancing both narrow and broad ones, you enhance your ability to identify trends and make informed decisions.

Title: Director of Client Success

Homebase: Denver, Colorado

Fun Fact: I'm a dual US-Canadian citizen who grew up in the States but spent a couple of years hitting the slopes in Whistler, BC. I get double the Thanksgiving fun each year, celebrating Canadian Thanksgiving with family and friends in October! I also try to hit up our family reunion every other year, and this year’s gathering was a blast with 79 people in attendance!

What do you like to do outside of work? I’m a water baby at heart, whether I'm working out or just relaxing at the pool. Even though I’m landlocked in Colorado, beach vacations, snorkeling, and ocean swims are absolute favorites! I’m also a sports fanatic, with a passion for NCAA football and basketball (Go Hawkeyes!), NFL, and NHL. Plus, I’m an animal lover with one Great Dane and two cats as my furry companions!

What is your “key driver” in doing what you do? I get excited when clients act on their feedback and make positive changes in the workplace. It doesn’t need to be a massive overhaul—small tweaks can significantly boost employee engagement, creating a ripple effect in their personal lives and everyday interactions.
