Best Practices for Using Benchmark Data

Benchmark data provides valuable context, helping you understand how your organization compares to norms and market trends. While these comparisons are insightful, it’s important to stay grounded in your organization’s goals, culture, and employee experience. Below are tips to help you use benchmarks effectively.

  • Adding Context: Use benchmark data to frame your scores, not define them. Gauge whether your scores are relatively high or low but keep your focus on improving what matters most within your organization.
  • Progress Over Comparison: Prioritize internal progress over outperforming others. Start with your own trends and goals, then address external comparisons when helpful.
  • Highlight Blind Spots: Scores far below benchmarks may indicate areas that need attention, while those above indicate strengths worth better understanding and sustaining.
  • Communicate Carefully: When communicating results, start with your organization’s story. Use benchmarks to support your narrative but keep the focus on internal progress and what matters most to your employees.

While benchmark data provides valuable insight, it’s only one piece of the puzzle. When used thoughtfully, it can drive meaningful, context driven action that continuously improves your organization.

What is your favorite vacation spot?

This is a hard one! I love any kind of cozy vacation. Every year, we take a lake/cabin trip in the summer to Priest Lake, Idaho. I love being outdoors as long as I can go back to somewhere cozy, clean, and comfortable at night! I’m definitely a mountains over beach girl but I can appreciate any new experience. I also love visiting big cities because I love to eat! I went to Boston last Fall and loved all of the Italian food.

What do you like to do outside of work?

I love to swim, bike, run, and hike. I’ve been injured for a little while so lately, I’m just enjoying some beautiful walks around my neighborhood. Luckily for me, there isn’t a bad view in Utah Valley. While I’ve been unable to be as active lately, I have learned to bake sourdough and quilt. I also like to color while I watch a favorite cozy TV show. Basically, I just like to stay busy! As a true extravert, all of these activities are made better for me when I can do them with family or friends. I especially love doing any activity with my husband who is my best friend in the world.

What is your “key driver” in doing what you do?

I believe in the importance of employees being heard within their organization. People Element’s platform is built for that. Communication is key and I think that our surveys are the perfect aid to communicating within a company. I work on coached surveys and the support channel which both help our clients to use our platform as effectively as possible. I think our product is a great tool and I’m passionate about making sure that our clients have a great experience with it. I feel fulfilled when I can help someone launch a successful survey within their organization.
